Awareness

Allow me to introduce you to Jeff Salmon...

Hi. I’m Jeff. I’m 42 years old and the father of two boys Henry (12) and Maxwell (10). My Father is 75 and I have two older brothers. I currently live in Edina and am self-employed with a chemical distribution company. What inspired me to get healthy? Last June, my brother was diagnosed with AFIB (atrial fibrillation). It was such a shock to me and I remember feeling terrified about myself. That day changed my outlook on life! I decided this was enough and I had to change my lifestyle! I needed to take care of myself and feel good about me. After the news of my brother, I decided to do research on my family blood lines. My mother passed away at 59 from a massive heart attack 13 years ago right in front of me. It still seems surreal to me till this day. My mother’s siblings have all had heart related issues. Out of 4 siblings on her side, only one is living and he is 69. The other three all died of heart disease. I tried changing my life with diet and getting fit. Nothing was working for me! I decided to sit down with Aaron and get his advice.

It was not an overnight, complete overhaul of my life, but started out with small steps. Aaron and I discussed my lifestyle from family, and our family history of heart disease to work, sleep, and exercise. I started out with changing my meal choices daily and my sleep routine. I was packing small, fist-size baggies full of veggies and fruit, something to have during the day and since I’m in the car a lot, this was perfect for me. It really helped me not be so hungry by the time lunch and dinner rolled around. I was still having my breakfast, lunch and dinner but just not huge portions. Now, every Sunday I plan and prep my meals for the week!

Now, the sleep routine! I’ve never been a sound sleeper but I was waking up 3-4 times a night. I was barely making it through the day without wanting to take a nap! After discussing with Aaron, he gave me some good ideas to try: taking a cold shower, foam rolling an hour before bed, putting the phone in a different room (Ugh! This was the toughest!), meditating and going to bed at a consistent time. I had to tinker around with these but I finally got into a very good sleep routine. At first I thought I was never going to be able to sleep well, but now I can say that I sleep GREAT!

Lastly, I changed my mindset on my exercise program. After really starting to figure out my lifestyle, I was going to FIT an average of 5 times a week. I became motivated about improving my overall fitness! I’m excited to hit the gym and challenge myself daily. If I had one word to describe my overall transformation and changes I’ve made in my life, it’s AWARENESS.

Since August 1st, I’ve lost 33 pounds and I feel so much better about myself. The weight loss was always a goal of mine but I really feel that with all of these transformations I’ve done to make my lifestyle healthy, I feel strong, healthy, confident and fit! I will be the first to tell you that I had “bumps” in the journey and it wasn’t easy. I had to deal with being diagnosed with cancer, brother going through a heart procedure and just general life stressors!  But, I will tell you that going to FIT has changed my life. Becoming AWARE of yourself has the power to help you change for the better.
